2nd International Conference on Lesson Study Lesson Study: Learning Reform for Quality Improvement in EducationJuly 31, 2009 – August 1, 2009 July 31, 2009: Workshop August 1, 2009: Conference Organized by ICLS (Indonesia Center for Lesson Study) Background Successful implementation of Lesson Study at SISTTEMS program (Strengthening in-Service Teacher Training in Mathematics and Science Education at Junior Secondary Level) in three districts (Sumedang, Bantul, and Pasuruan) has promoted Lesson Study over the country as a continuing teacher professional development in Indonesia. In Lesson Study, teachers work collaboratively to improve the quality of classroom practice through a planning, observation and reflection cycle for lesson planning and delivery. SISTTEMS program proved effective in terms of building collegiality, enhancing knowledge base of teaching, and improving academic culture and working climate at school. Such a timely achieved effort needs a sustained approach to ensure Lesson Study as a culture of teaching. In 2008, therefore, FPMIPA UPI established Indonesia Center for Lesson Study (ICLS) to take key role in Lesson Study development around the archipelago. The 1st International Conference on Lesson Study held by the center had attracted teachers, researchers, policy makers resulting appreciation to Lesson Study. In the meantime, there is a growing interest from other districts to infuse Lesson Study into their educational program. Recently, six districts, i.e. district of Sumedang and Karawang in West Java, district of Bantul in Yogyakarta, district of Pasuruan, city of Pasuruan and city of Surabaya in East Java Province, are implementing Lesson Study intensively. In addition, starting this year, other three districts/cities, i.e. city of Padang in West Sumatra, district of Banjarbaru in South Kalimantan, district of North Minahasa in North Sulawesi Province, will implement Lesson Study. Moreover, Directorate General of Higher Education of Ministry of National Education has supported other ten universities in Indonesia to implement Lesson Study. Considering the growing concerns to Lesson Study, therefore, it is necessary for ICLS to organize the 2nd International Conference on Lesson Study to share best practices of Lesson Study globally for benchmarking and quality assurance. The Conference will present keynote addresses from Japan, Singapore, and Indonesia. In addition, the Conference offers participants with a real experience workshop on Lesson Study (open lesson and reflection) at a piloting Junior Secondary School. |
