  by S3 IPA    Feb 23, 2026

A Focus Group Discussion (FGD) between the Korean Astronomical Society (KAS) and the Science Education Study Program at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) was held on Thursday, February 5, 2026. The event was attended by lecturers from both the Science Education and Physics study programs. The session was opened and moderated by the Head of the Science Education Study Program, Prof. Dr. Phil. Ari Widodo, M.Ed. The program began with an introductory session from both UPI and the South Korean delegation, followed by a presentation on the development of astronomical research in South Korea by Prof. Jungjoo Sohn. She emphasized that astronomical research in South Korea is continuously evolving. Furthermore, she highlighted six essential domains of astronomical knowledge within the South Korean curriculum: celestial motions, the sun and solar system, stars and the interstellar medium, galaxies and the universe, astronomical methodology, and humanity and astronomy. Prof. Sohn suggested that future curricula should strengthen the synergy between research and education while developing authentic digital learning activities.

The discussion continued with an overview of the Korean Astronomical Society’s initiatives by Hyeondong Jang and Sungju Jang. The presentation noted that KAS consistently conducts astronomy-related activities throughout the year and regularly welcomes visits from students, teachers, and researchers. Notably, KAS expressed its openness to hosting UPI students for short-term internships (one to two weeks). The FGD concluded with the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) and Implementation Arrangement (IA) between the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Education (FPMIPA) UPI and KAS, covering education, research, and community service. Several collaborative activities have already been initiated, including a general lecture, a teacher workshop, and a faculty discussion. It is hoped that this collaboration will continue throughout the coming year.
