The Mathematics Education and Mathematics Study Program at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) organizes English Day ft. Zemi (Mini Seminar) as part of its efforts to improve the English proficiency of its lecturers. This activity is held every Friday in a mini-seminar format, where lecturers—especially young lecturers—present the progress of their research in English. Through these presentations, lecturers not only enhance their academic skills in presenting research at an international level but also build confidence in communicating in English.
In addition to research presentations, the English Day ft. Zemi sessions also include casual discussions in English on various random topics. The purpose of these discussions is to improve speaking skills, particularly in an academic context and for preparing for English proficiency tests such as IELTS. Through these discussions, lecturers become more accustomed to using English in everyday conversations and academic settings, whether for international publications, preparation to continue their study, or research collaborations with global partners.
This initiative is expected to serve as an effective platform for lecturers to continuously enhance their English skills. With improved English proficiency, lecturers from the Mathematics Education and Mathematics Study Program at UPI are expected to be more active in publishing research in international journals, participating in global conferences, and establishing collaborations with academics worldwide. English Day ft. Zemi is a concrete step towards supporting UPI’s vision of fostering a more global and competitive academic environment.
