Wednesday, July 6, 2022

The Mathematics Education Department received a visit from lecturer and students from Mathematics Education Master Program at Jakarta State University (UNJ). The group consisted of Dr. Tian Abdul Aziz and 16 students were welcomed in the Smart Classroom. The event began with a presentation about qualitative research in mathematics education by Dr. Dadang Djuandi, M.Si. (the Head of Mathematics Education Department). Dr. Dadang Djuandi explained that qualitative research in mathematics education is used primarily when researchers want to develop theories; describe complex realities, and obtain meaning. He then explained examples of qualitative research applications, such as narrative research, case studies, phenomenology, and grounded theory. In the last half of the presentation, research based on the critical theory & ethnic model by Dr. Dadang Djuandi and his colleagues in the Mathematics Education study program was elaborated.

Dr. Tian Abdul Aziz, the leader of the visiting group, stated that the presentation of qualitative research is expected to inspire students who will conduct thesis research. Currently, most research in mathematics education is still more focused on quantitative research. Therefore, exposure to qualitative research will add insight to students who will do thesis research. One of the student representatives also stated that the explanations and examples of qualitative research inspired her to describe a complex reality and give meaning to it. The student mentioned that one of the studies that Dr. Dadang Djuandi highlighted the experience of mathematics teachers when teaching in disadvantaged areas. The idea of doing qualitative narrative research is fascinating because, in addition to raising stories that are often underestimated, the research results can be the basis for suggestions for improvement in education. Someday, equal education for all Indonesians throughout the country will not be merely a dream but a reality.
