Sukabumi— Science Education Program at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) successfully organized a community service activity in collaboration with Biology Education Study Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sukabumi (UMMI). The event took place on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the Auditorium of Universitas Muhammadiyah Sukabumi. The workshop, which ran from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM, was attended by 87 participants, consisting of science teachers from junior high schools in various schools across the city of Sukabumi, Sukabumi Regency, and surrounding areas.
Carrying the theme “Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Deep Learning Training for Junior High School Science Teachers in Sukabumi and Surrounding Areas,” the workshop aimed to enhance teachers’ understanding of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), Deep Learning approach, and assessment for their implementation in science education. Additionally, this event served as momentum to strengthen the network between UPI and partner schools for the development of innovative educational practices, particularly in Sukabumi region.
The event began with an opening session, followed by welcoming remarks from the Head of the Science Education Study Program at UPI, Prof. Dr. Ari Widodo, M.Ed., and Dr. Bachtiar, M.Pd., Dean of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UMMI. The session also featured a presentation of souvenirs and a group photo symbolizing inter-institutional collaboration. Afterwards, the keynote session was delivered by Prof. Dr. Ari Widodo, M.Ed., who presented the profile and research directions of the Science Education Study Program at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels, followed by an interactive Q&A session.
Following the plenary session, participants were divided into three parallel workshops focusing on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), Deep Learning, and Assessment. Each parallel class was facilitated by science education lecturers. In these sessions, participants not only listened to conceptual presentations but were also actively engaged in lesson plan development, group discussions, and product presentations. Participants in ESD and Deep Learning classes were guided to develop teaching modules based on ESD and Deep Learning, respectively, while participants in the Assessment Class developed evaluation instruments such as test items.
The workshop concluded at 03:00 PM in each parallel class, with a planned online follow-up session for product improvement.
”Among the several workshops I have attended, this has been one of the most meaningful and insightful experiences. It aligns very much with the theme, and I truly enjoyed it. Hopefully, the outcomes of this activity can be brought to our schools and implemented with our students,” said Mrs. Yuningsih, one of the participating teachers.
This activity is expected to enhance teachers’ competencies through the creation of concrete products such as lesson plans and assessment instruments, while also fostering partnerships between UPI, UMMI, and partner schools in Sukabumi region.
