Ecuid-Tree: FPMIPA UPI Students’ Innovation to Combat CO2 Pollution in Enclosed Spaces

Students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences Education (FPMIPA) at the Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) have created a prototype called “Ecuid-Tree” as an innovative solution to combat carbon dioxide (CO2) pollution in enclosed spaces. This prototype combines Spirulina algae and Guppy fish with an Arduino Uno-based automatic system to reduce CO2 concentration in offices and laboratories.

The team consists of students from various disciplines. Salsabila Yasyfa Khairunnisa, De Shila Syailinda Maulida, and Revalina Caroline Tomasowa from the Biology Study Program focus on the biological aspects and ecosystem of the prototype. Khrisna Wahyu Wibisono from the Computer Science Education Study Program contributes to the automatic control system, while Yosep Jeremi from the Mechanical Engineering Study Program applies his technical skills in designing and building the hardware of the prototype.

Spirulina, an algae known for its efficiency in photosynthesis, and Guppy fish, which help create a supportive micro-ecosystem, are used in this system. “We aim to create a solution that not only absorbs CO2 but also innovatively utilizes ecological aspects,” said Salsabila Yasyfa Khairunnisa, the team leader.

The system is managed by Arduino Uno to maintain the balance of light, nutrients, and water movement, which are crucial for the health of the algae and fish. Under the guidance of Prof. Topik Hidayat, Ph.D., the team encompasses a range of disciplines, including biology, computer science, and mechanical engineering.

This project supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land), as well as the “Indonesia Emas 2045” vision. The team hopes their innovation will inspire further research and broader applications in addressing indoor air pollution.

With “Ecuid-Tree,” the team contributes to a cleaner and more sustainable future, bringing us closer to solutions for urgent global environmental challenges and supporting Indonesia’s vision for 2045.
