Environmental Literacy Innovation: UPI Physics Education and Physics Students Achieve International Success with ENLIAP

Students from the Physics Education and Physics Study Programs at FPMIPA UPI, Class of 2022/2023, formed a community called SOUSE (Some of Us Saving Environment). They developed an innovative concept called Green Shack, which attracted public attention and was published in various national media. This idea received a positive response from the PKK organization of Sarijadi Village, which invited SOUSE to conduct workshops and training on green industry practices.

The activities began with environmental education, followed by hands-on practices utilizing organic waste to produce high-quality compost and transform barren land into water-absorbing soil. The innovative tools they created sparked public enthusiasm, with many residents requesting direct installations in their neighborhoods.

Realizing the importance of environmental literacy, the SOUSE team developed a digital application called ENLIAP (Environment Literacy Application). The app provides comprehensive information on zero-waste systems, featuring up-to-date literature references, practice videos, simulations, and interactive games. They consulted with Dr. Selly Feranie, S.Pd., M.Si., Head of the Geomechanics and Rock Engineering Laboratory at UPI, during the development process.

ENLIAP is officially registered under intellectual property rights with number 000761901. The app has been actively promoted through various lecturer-student PKM activities. One notable community service program (P2M) was conducted at the Islamic University of Lampung, where faculty members praised the app’s comprehensive features, which were considered highly supportive of environmental-based learning. ENLIAP was also adopted at SMP 2 Buahdua, Sumedang, as an environmental-based educational tool.

A major achievement was secured when ENLIAP won a gold medal at the international Negeri Sembilan International Exposition (NSIEx) 2024, an event featuring 353 participants from five countries and evaluated by 300 judges. Additionally, the innovation article about ENLIAP was published in an international chapter book titled Nurturing Creativity: Through Research, Technology, and Social Innovation, with e-ISBN 978-629-99383-6-1.

SOUSE’s presence and innovation demonstrate that creative collaboration between students, lecturers, and communities can yield tangible contributions to environmental sustainability and enhance science-based and ecological learning quality.
